Can you spot the difference?

That’s right! The second picture is taken slightly after the first one. You can tell because the spoon is slightly warmer.

You see, as time passes, heat moves from hot places to cooler places. Never the other way round. You’d never pop a spoon into a steaming hot cappuccino and find the spoon getting cooler.

It’s called “thermodynamics”

No shit, Sherlock! – Time passes and heat moves. It’s no biggie Jack. I expected better from you

NO! You don’t quite appreciate the depth and beauty of it – time passes BECAUSE heat moves. Heat goes from hot to cold: time moves forward. The two are joined together intricately. Should time ever move backwards, heat will flow the other way. 

But it won’t 

Is there a point to this then Jack?

Oh yes. You see, there are hot places, there are cool places. Heat moves between them, and time ticks on. Give it long enough though, and all the hot places will have cooled down and all the cool places will have warmed up. 

The entire universe will be a uniform, beige lump at exactly the same temperature. 

And because there are no temperature differences anywhere, then time will stop. 

Actually, stop.

NO! You still don’t get it!

We are lucky enough to be around when heat is still moving, time is still flowing. We can’t slow it down. We can’t reverse it. You can’t go back. Forward is the only direction – and it won’t go on forever. 

And?

Embrace it! Live a little. Do the stuff that makes your soul sing. Let your heart beat a little faster. Open your eyes a little wider. Feel alive. Lose yourself. Let’s face it. If time will just stop at some point, you should use it wisely while you can.

Go for that early morning swim in the North Sea. Go to that gig. Have that pudding. Watch the sun set. Do the job that makes you happy. Spend time with people who make you smile. Stroke a cat. Rescue a seal. Write a blog. Gaze at the stars…

Oh, and most importantly, throw a party and book a magician so that your guests get a feeling of child-like awe.
